Shipmaster was founded in 1959 in Scarborough, Ontario by William S. Sutherland. Bill was a purchasing agent for Gair Company when the company was taken over by Continental Can. At the ripe old age of 57, Bill decided to start Shipmaster with his own capital and a loan from the bank. Early equipment was a box maker, rotary slotter, hand taper, and a slitter. Most of the first orders were in the fifty to sixty quantity range and Bill would help to produce and deliver them in his car. The premise was, as now, quick delivery.
In the early days, some of the large integrated companies had lead times of six weeks or more. Recognising the opportunity, our original lead times were 7-10 business days and, often sooner. In the early '60's we moved to a 14,000 sq. ft. plant in Scarborough and purchased our first printer slotter. Later a second was added.
In the early '70's we moved to a 25,000 sq. ft plant in Markham and added new converting equipment. Later we took over the balance of the plant expanding to 40,000 sq. ft. Addition equipment was purchased which replaced the letter presses with flexo folder gluers, rotary die cutter and other equipment.
In the 80's 3 day lead times became the norm for Shipmaster and in many cases we produced boxes for next day delivery.
In 2002, we purchased our new home at 380 Esna Park Drive in Markham. The plant is 80,000 sq. ft. and we have added a four colour Flexo folder gluer, a jumbo flexo folder gluer and automated the plant. We have been able to reduce lead times to a matter of hours when needed by the customer. We still have some of our original customers on board and we continue to look for innovative ways to meet our customer demands.
We are hosting an open house in May of this year and are inviting customers past and present, employees and immediate family, and other business associates to attend our celebration and we look forward to the next 50.
